N-type semiconductor
A semiconductor produced by doping an intrinsic semiconductor with an electron-donor impurity (e.g., phosphorous in silicon).

Nacelle
The cover for the gear box, drive train, generator, and other components of a wind turbine.

Nail
A metal rod used as a fastener with various materials, most often lumber. Nails come in a variety of shapes and sizes for specific uses.

Nail pops
When the structure of a new home settles, nails in the load-bearing parts tend to pop out slightly.

Nail puller
A bar used to remove a nail from a surface. The bar has jaws that grip the nail so it can be pried out.

Nail set
Finished and fine woodwork require that nails be set or sunk slightly below the surface of the workpiece. A hammer and a nail set recess the nail, allowing the remaining cavity to be filled and blended with the surrounding wood.

Nail spotter
An applicator used to apply and smooth joint compound over the heads of fasteners on drywall.

Nailer
A piece of lumber, preferably treated, that is secured to the deck, walls, or to premanufactured curbs. Nailers are used to receive fasteners for roof membranes. Generally, nailers are installed wherever it is necessary to secure base flashings and edge metal.

Nailhead rusting
Rust from iron nails that penetrates or bleeds through the coating and stains the surrounding area.

Nailing block
A wooden block attached to or set into masonry to provide a surface for nailing other materials.
