Problem with Recessed Lights

The problem with recessed lights is that they do not light rooms very well.

They throw their light in a cone-shaped downward fashion.

Very little light is emitted horizontally, which means little reflected light.

The result is often a lot of lights and a still relatively dark room.

Track lights aren't much better, since they focus their concentrated beams in a single direction.

Track lights can be fine for illuminating specific areas, but do not do well in illuminating entire rooms.

You may instead wish to think about pendant light suspended from a rod from the ceiling or suspended ceiling fans.

Both can provide multi-light fixtures which emit light in all directions.

This can actually give you a brighter room with less fixtures at a lower cost.

The ceiling fan (s) would be my choice, since they can also be used to circulate hot air which will be otherwise trapped at the ceiling.
