How Much Propane

Does a Generator Use?

A generator that’s underpowered, and running at full capacity for a long time, will use more fuel than a larger model. Although the larger model costs more initially, it could save you money in the long run.

It varies by generator size, age, and condition.

It takes twice as much natural gas for the equivalent output of propane. Propane is cheaper than gasoline but, according to the US Department of Energy, only produces about 75 percent of the power.

Propane generators are more fuel efficient than natural gas, but not gasoline.
