How We Tested the Best Rechargeable Hand Warmers

To start our ranking, we spent hours researching top-performing hand warmers across several different categories, from catalytic models to heated gloves to waist pockets. We sorted them by battery capacity, heat settings, and other special features, then vetted existing user reviews, brand reputation, and value. In total, we combed through dozens of models, which we then narrowed down to the top nine to test in person.

We subjected each hand warmer to a rigorous testing process that involved three different stages. We first charged each hand warmer fully, recording the time it took and comparing that to the manufacturer’s estimate. Then we took them all outside in temperatures of roughly 30 degrees Fahrenheit (F), where we measured the hand warmers’ temperature at each setting using an infrared thermometer. The exceptions here were any catalytic or gloved models, which either only had one setting or were difficult to get an accurate read of with the thermometer; for those, we simply estimated by feel.

Second, after bringing them back inside and charging them fully again, we set each hand warmer to medium heat and took their temperature. Then we wrapped them in towels and stuffed them in the freezer at 0 degrees F. For roughly 8 hours (or until their batteries wore out), we took their temperature every hour and noted any fluctuations or deviations from the manufacturer’s estimate. Again, the exceptions here were the gloved or catalytic models, which were difficult to gauge accurately or which would be starved for oxygen in the freezer. We left those outside in temperatures that fluctuated between 25 and 35 degrees F over the course of the day.

Our last testing stage was more subjective and involved simply using each hand warmer out in the world. We took a few with us hunting in 25 degrees F; a few skiing in temperatures that varied widely between a brisk 10 degrees F and a “balmy” 40 degrees F; and a few we used during less physically intensive activities, such as running errands and walking around the block. We compared and contrasted how each model performed, both across these conditions and with each other. For those hand warmers that double as power banks, we also used them to charge our devices, noting how long they lasted.

Our Top Picks

Our testing gave us a comprehensive picture of how each hand warmer performed not only when compared with the manufacturer’s expectations but also when subjected to real-world conditions, including cold, ice, and snow. While we found that all will keep fingers and palms warmed in a pinch, some of them may be more suitable for specific conditions and activities than others. A few models also offer specialized features or superlative performance that we thought really set them apart from the rest.

It’s worth noting that few models performed as advertised, neither running as long nor as hot as specified by the manufacturer. This was especially true when exposed to the cold; inside, at room temperature, their performance moved closer to manufacturer claims.

Ocoopa H01 PD Pro 10,000mAh Rechargeable Hand Warmer

The Best Rechargeable Hand Warmer Option: Ocoopa H01 PD Pro 10,000mAh Rechargeable Hand Warmer
Photo: amazon.com

Ocoopa is known for making a wide variety of hand warmers at fairly affordable prices. In fact, its ever-evolving line is enough to make anyone’s head spin; new models come out regularly, and with only minor differences between them, it can be difficult to distinguish one from the other. From what we gathered, the Ocoopa H01 PD Pro is its newest and most powerful model, featuring a weather-resistant design and fast-charging features for powering other devices. In our book, that makes it the best all-around hand warmer money can buy.

The Ocoopa is packed with features not often found in other hand warmers. Its 10,000mAh battery boasts both Quick Charge 3.0 and Power Delivery technology, meaning it can charge itself and other devices faster using a built-in USB-A or USB-C port. It has three warming levels, with heat conducted through smooth silicone pads on either side of the device. The Pro model of the H01 PD also features a soft silicone strip that covers the charging ports, giving the device an IP45 waterproof rating.

Notably, the H01 PD is the only model that met—and even exceeded—its advertised temperature. Tested inside, it reached a whopping 130 degrees F in under a minute and fluctuated between 120 and 140 degrees F in the freezer over 6 hours—hotter and longer than any other model tested. Outside, we took the H01 PD hunting in the woods one morning and were amazed at how toasty it kept our fingers in -30-degree F temperatures. In fact, on its medium and high settings, the H01 PD can get so warm that it’s almost uncomfortable to hold with bare hands. Luckily, the oval shape is easy to hold while wearing gloves, and it also comes with its own soft carry case.

As a power bank, the H01 PD also works great and is capable of charging a smartphone to full capacity in one go. That feature, together with its high-temperature performance, makes this a great model to have on hand when traveling in cold climates. We knew the H01 PD was our number one pick when we found ourselves reaching for it out of the rest of the bunch again and again for personal use.

Zippo HeatBank 9s Rechargeable Hand Warmer

The Best Rechargeable Hand Warmer Option: Zippo HeatBank 9s Rechargeable Hand Warmer
Photo: amazon.com

Zippo may be best known as a lighter brand, but in the last several years, the company has also become a leading maker of rechargeable hand warmers. In addition to catalytic models, Zippo makes several electric hand warmers, among them the HeatBank 9s. When we weren’t using our number one choice from Ocoopa, we found ourselves gravitating to this warmer thanks to its ergonomic design and versatile heating abilities.

The 9s has a 5,200mAh battery that can provide heat or charge USB-compatible devices. It takes around a minute to heat up, and it recharges in about 2 hours—faster than any other model we tested. The 9s also has more heat settings than other models we tested, with three indicating intensity when one side is heating, and three indicating intensity when both sides are heating. That makes it an extremely versatile device suitable for many different situations.

In practice, the 9s performed admirably. While it lasted only about half its advertised time in our freezer test—5 hours versus 9—it obtained a consistent 100 to 110 degrees F across different environments, including while hunting in 25 degrees F one morning. The 9s also works great as a power bank, capable of fully charging a smartphone and partially charging larger devices, including cameras and laptops.

We especially enjoyed the 9s’ design—the contoured S-shape makes it supremely comfortable to grip and hold in one hand, and we liked how the smooth metal exterior feels both in a gloved and bare palm. It might be because of its conductive metal surface that the 9s often felt just as hot as some of the plastic models we tried, even though it registered a slightly lower temperature. Either way, it’s that design that kept us coming back to the 9s almost as often as our first pick.

Product Specs

  • Battery size: 5,200mAh
  • Battery life: Up to 9 hours on low heat on both sides
  • Power bank?: Yes

Pros

  • Features 6 heat settings to suit many preferences and required heat outputs
  • Ergonomic design makes it easy to grip and hold for long periods
  • Conveniently doubles as a power bank; can charge cell phones, cameras, and other devices

Cons

  • Charges via older micro-USB port rather than newer USB-C port

Best Bang For The Buck

Orastone Double-Sided Rechargeable Hand Warmer

The Best Rechargeable Hand Warmer Option: Orastone Double-Sided Rechargeable Hand Warmer
Photo: amazon.com

Most rechargeable hand warmers feature a pretty utilitarian design, but Orastone’s double-sided model offers enough style to satisfy the aesthetically minded—including us. We appreciated the attention to detail put into making the device, from the sleek, compact body to the fun colors and patterns that adorn it. Even the packaging that the hard warmer arrives in is thought through, and we couldn’t help but think it would make a great gift for a loved one.

The Orastone doesn’t only feature a cute design, however. It also boasts plenty of functionality as we learned while using it to keep our hands warm during our daily routine. Orastone doesn’t list the battery size for this device, and it only lasted 2 hours in our freezer test, but the small size has other benefits, including the ability to heat up and recharge quickly. It also made it easier to hold in the palms of our hands than some other models on this list, an experience enhanced by the device’s premium-feeling rubber-coated exterior.

In addition to a compact size, the Orastone also features a rubber strap that can be used to dangle the device from a backpack or purse, plus a built-in LED flashlight. During commutes to work in 30 degrees F, we found ourselves using the Orastone to heat our fingers while we waited for the car to warm up, and we also used the flashlight to rummage through the glove box more than once. The Orastone may not be the warmest or longest-lasting performer on our list, but it’s a great option to stow in a bag or car for those times when a little extra heat is needed.

Product Specs

  • Battery size: N/A
  • Battery life: 3 to 4 hours
  • Power bank?: No

Pros

  • Available in multiple colors and patterns to suit any preference
  • LED flashlight comes in handy when rummaging through bags or glove boxes
  • Can be easily attached to a backpack or bag with the rubber strap

Cons

  • Low battery capacity and limited operating times

Best Refillable

Zippo 12-Hour Refillable Hand Warmer

Best Rechargeable Hand Warmer Option: Zippo 12-Hour Refillable Hand Warmer
Photo: amazon.com

While it’s hard to beat the convenience of an electric hand warmer, one major drawback when it comes to these devices is their need for a power source. This can become a problem during adventures off the grid or in any situation where access to an outlet is limited. For those scenarios, a catalytic model is a great alternative—and few are as reliable as the Zippo 12-hour refillable hand warmer.

Zippo’s refillable hand warmer runs on fuel, which is converted into heat via catalytic reaction. Zippo recommends filling the unit with its own brand of lighter fluid, which must be purchased separately, but it does come with a small plastic reservoir that can be used to measure the fluid and minimize the mess when transferring it into the warmer itself. Once filled, simply hold a match or lighter to the batting to start the catalytic reaction. The whole process is a bit more involved than simply plugging it into the wall, especially for first timers—we forgot to let the vapors set after filling it initially and struggled to keep the burner lit.

Once the hand warmer gets going, however, its benefits become obvious. Not only does the Zippo refillable hand warmer burn nearly as hot as our top picks at a consistent 110-plus degrees F, but it also lasts almost twice as long. We left ours out overnight and found it still warm to the touch a full 16 hours later. And the lightweight chrome-plated body does such a good job conducting heat that we would hazard against using it without the included sheath.

Unfortunately, there is no off switch on this process—once the burner is lit, the unit will continue to produce heat until it runs out of fuel. It’s possible to reduce its runtime by filling it with less lighter fluid, but that may be hard to gauge since the included reservoir only has a 12-hour measurement marker. Still, we think that hunters, campers, or anyone else who spends long periods outdoors will be glad to have the extra heat.

Product Specs

  • Battery size: N/A
  • Battery life: 12 hours
  • Power bank?: No

Pros

  • Offers 12 (and often more) hours of heat for long outings, camping, or hunting
  • Includes a storage pouch to protect skin from burns
  • Perfect for occasions when electricity is not available; does not require charging

Cons

  • Requires lighter fluid that is not included

Best Battery Pack

Innopaw Split-Magnetic Rechargeable Hand Warmers

The Best Rechargeable Hand Warmer Option: Innopaw Split-Magnetic Rechargeable Hand Warmers
Photo: amazon.com

Many hand warmers on the market today are capable of charging a device in addition to heating, but we’d hesitate to use them as dedicated power banks. Beyond simply charging a device, a true power bank should do it quickly and easily. If it’s going to double as a hand warmer, it should be able to perform both functions at the same time.

That’s where Innopaw’s hand warmer comes in. It’s the only model we tested that’s able to charge a device and heat itself simultaneously, making it a true hand warmer and battery pack combo in our book. It’s also unique in that it can “split” into separate pieces, held together via magnet. Each side is identical, featuring a USB-C and USB-A port, three indicator lights, and a 5,000mAh battery.

Initially skeptical about all of these features, we were surprised to find that the Innopaw performed well across categories. Though it never got as hot as our top pick, it did reach an advertised 115 degrees F in our freezer test. We also found that the battery fell far short of its advertised 11-hour runtime, lasting only 6 continuous hours in the freezer, but it did run longer in more moderate temps and at its lower setting. One quirk of the split-magnetic design is that the performance of one side may differ from the other. In our freezer test, for example, we noticed that one side died almost 30 minutes before the other.

When we used it as a battery pack, the Innopaw fast-charging feature powered up a smartphone in 2 hours, though we did have to switch sides when one died. Charging and heating at the same time drained the batteries faster but still fully powered our phone between the two sides. At over 4 hours, the device itself does take longer than some other models to charge, but we think that’s a small price to pay for its innovative functionality.

Product Specs

  • Battery size: 10,000mAh
  • Battery life: Up to 15 hours on low heat
  • Power bank?: Yes

Pros

  • Innovative design can be split into 2 devices to be held in both hands
  • Doubles as a power bank and can charge and heat simultaneously
  • Reached advertised temperature even in freezer test

Cons

  • Long charge time; may need to be plugged in overnight to ensure proper use

Best Rechargeable Gloves

Savior Heat S06 Heated Full Genuine Leather Gloves

The Best Rechargeable Hand Warmer Option: Savior Heat S06 Heated Full Genuine Leather Gloves
Photo: amazon.com

During outdoor activities when hands need full protection from the elements, a pair of heated gloves can make a world of difference. In this category, Savior Heat is a leader—particularly with its all-leather model. Constructed of genuine lambskin, each glove also incorporates a 2,200mAh battery and far-infrared fiber heating elements across the back of the hand and fingers, offering warmth where it’s needed most.

We wore Savior Heat’s leather gloves while skiing in Lake Tahoe, where they kept our hands and fingers warm in temps that were less than 20 degrees F and would have otherwise left them frigid. Savior Heat doesn’t advertise its temperature settings, and it was difficult to gauge accurately how hot the gloves got during our testing, but we never found ourselves wishing for more warmth than they provided. In fact, the gloves themselves are so warm and well made that we mostly used them with the heating elements off.

On medium, the gloves lasted the advertised 3.5 hours. One drawback here is the design of the batteries, which require a specialized 7.4-volt cable to charge. Plus, they do not have any lights indicating when they’re fully powered. Thankfully, the gloves come with an entire charging kit, including a dual cable that can charge both batteries simultaneously.

Savior Heat’s all-leather gloves are just one model that the brand makes, each specialized for different activities. Their snow sports glove, which we awarded the top spot in our review of the best heated gloves, features water-resistant polyester rather than leather and longer cuffs, making them ideal for skiing, snowmobiling, and snow shoveling. The company also makes a pair designed for motorcycle riding with a more rugged construction and plastic knuckle protectors. But we think the all-leather model is the most versatile of the bunch. We can imagine these gloves serving us well both in the snow and on the road, plus anywhere else our hands need protection and warmth.

Product Specs

  • Battery size: 2,200mAh
  • Battery life: Up to 6 to 7 hours on low heat
  • Power bank?: No

Pros

  • Ideal for outdoor sports; suitable for skiing, hiking, driving, and more
  • Waterproof and wind-resistant for ample warmth and protection while outside
  • Includes 3 heat settings to suit multiple preferences and necessary heat outputs

Cons

  • Short battery life compared to similar rechargeable hand warmers available

Best Weatherproof

Celestron Elements ThermoTank Hand Warmer

The Best Rechargeable Hand Warmer Option: Celestron Elements ThermoTank Hand Warmer
Photo: amazon.com

For camping, hiking, hunting, and other outdoor pursuits, it’s important to pick a hand warmer that’s built to last. Celestron’s lineup of hand warmers is designed for just these sorts of activities, featuring weatherproof materials and outstanding performance. We particularly liked the ThermoTank, which is durable enough to withstand all sorts of weather conditions but compact enough to take anywhere.

Compared to other models we tested, the ThermoTank is fairly basic. It has only one heat setting, reaching 90 degrees F in around 5 minutes when we tried it outside. In the freezer, the 4,400mAh battery lasted roughly 4 hours, which was a couple of hours shy of the advertised 6 hours. For such a small device, it also takes a surprisingly long time to charge—3 hours by our count— and has only one mini-USB port. The ThermoTank doesn’t work as a power bank, but a nearly identical version—Celestron’s ThermoCharge—does.

Still, what the ThermoTank lacks in features it makes up for in durability. The Celestron model was one of the most rugged hand warmers we tested, thanks both to sturdy aluminum housing and shockproof silicone end caps. We subjected the ThermoTank to several 6-foot drops onto hard concrete and noticed no discernible damage. And while it does not have a waterproof rating, the device continued to work fine after running it under water for several seconds.

Product Specs

  • Battery size: 4,400mAh
  • Battery life: Up to 6 hours
  • Power bank?: No

Pros

  • Very durable design thanks to rugged aluminum body and silicone end caps
  • Weather- and dust-resistant housing shields device from elements
  • Compact size fits easily in a pocket or bag

Cons

  • Only works with mini USB; does not work as power bank

Best Heated Muff

Ororo Bay City Heated Hand Warmer

The Best Rechargeable Hand Warmer Option: Ororo Bay City Heated Hand Warmer
Photo: amazon.com

While they may be more restrictive than gloves or handheld devices, few hand-warmer designs are as effective at trapping heat than hand muffs. Ororo’s Bay City model offers all the benefits of a hand muff but adds to it 3 heating elements powered by a 4,800mAh battery. We love Ororo’s hand warmer for tailgates, sports games, ice fishing, or any other sedentary activity in cold weather.

From material quality to design, Ororo’s hand muff feels like a premium product. The flexible ribbed cuffs on either end fit snugly around wrists, helping to trap heat, and we loved the feel of the soft fleece lining on our hands. A small zippered pocket on top and a larger one in front provide plenty of space to stash keys, cards, and other small devices, while an adjustable strap helps keep the whole muff secure around our waist. The exterior is also wind- and water-resistant, protecting our hands in snow or drizzle.

Powered on outside, the Bay City muff took about 15 minutes to heat up, at which point it was easy to cycle through its 3 color-coded heat settings: blue for Low, white for Medium, and red for High. The muff’s three carbon-fiber heating panels are also thoughtfully placed, with two smaller ones on the front and one larger one in the back. Sometimes we wished for more warmth even at the highest setting, but most of the time we were thrilled with how toasty Ororo’s muff kept our hands.

Product Specs

  • Battery size: 4,800mAh
  • Battery life: Up to 14 hours on low heat
  • Power bank?: Yes

Pros

  • Water- and wind-resistant exterior protects hands from inclement weather
  • Soft fleece lining provides comfort and insulation
  • Plenty of space to stash personal items with 2 exterior pockets

Cons

  • Settings could be warmer

What to Consider When Choosing a Rechargeable Hand Warmer

Rechargeable hand warmers come in various designs and styles, so choosing the right one can be a bit tricky. Some rechargeable hand warmers double as battery packs for smartphones, while others come in the shape of heated gloves and waist pockets. Though not technically rechargeable, some models may also run on fuel rather than batteries, but they can still be refilled over and over.

When shopping for a rechargeable hand warmer, keep the following considerations in mind, including battery type, life, and size as well as heat output and additional special features included by select brands.

Battery Size and Capacity

Battery size determines how long the heat will last as well as how long an electric hand warmer takes to charge and how hot it can get. The more powerful the battery, the higher the heat output and the longer the heating cycle. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries range in capacity from around 300 to 10,000mAh. The best rechargeable hand warmers last for up to 15 hours, though their battery lives are typically dependent on the heat setting being used. Charging times vary from model to model, and models with larger, more powerful batteries will generally take longer to charge.

Temperature Controls

Battery-powered hand warmers vary in heat output, with a minimum temperature starting around 85 degrees F to a maximum temperature of around 140 degrees F. Exact temps depend on the warmer’s battery capacity, available heat settings, and whether it heats on both sides. Here’s what to know about the features that affect heat output.

A low setting commonly heats to around 104 degrees F; medium may heat up to 122 degrees F; and high could go up to around 140 degrees F. This all depends on the product. Hand warmers with heat settings give users more control. Some rechargeable hand warmers heat on only one side, but many battery-operated warmers offer double-sided heat for the best overall heating effect.

Additional Features

While all rechargeable hand warmers serve the same basic purpose, some come with handy additional features. Here are some extra features that can be found in some rechargeable hand-warmer models.

  • Some models come with built-in flashlights as a safety feature for outdoor adventures.
  • Rechargeable hand warmers may do double duty as phone chargers.
  • Gloves with built-in hand-warming devices are useful because they allow shoppers to purchase a single product.
  • Some rechargeable hand warmers also include a massaging function, which provides a hand massage while simultaneously providing warmth.
  • Carrying cases may be included with some hand warmers.
  • Some models may include cords or carabiners to easily attach them to a bag or coat.
  • Though not technically rechargeable, some refillable hand warmers run on fuel, which is converted into heat via catalytic reaction.
