If you’re in the market for a new dishwasher, there are plenty of things to consider. From the special wash cycles, adjustable racks, soil sensors, noise levels, and cycle times, your head may already be spinning while comparing the different options. However, there is one additional item that you must not overlook when shopping: dishwasher dimensions.

Dishwashers come in different sizes, so learning which type fits best in a space and how to take proper dishwasher measurements before shopping is crucial.

Standard Dishwasher Sizes

It would be easy to assume all dishwashers are the same size, but many do not share the same dimensions. While there is a standard dishwasher size for built-in models, there are also oversized dishwashers, portable dishwashers, compact dishwashers, and countertop dishwashers.

Being familiar with the type of unit you need and verifying the measurements for your available space will save you the hassle of returning a dishwasher that doesn’t fit in your kitchen. Below is a list of some standard dishwasher dimensions for different types of dishwashers. Keep in mind that not all dishwashers in each category will have standard dimensions, but these figures provide a good idea of what to expect.

  • Built-in dishwasher: 24 inches wide by 24 inches deep by 35 inches tall
  • Oversized dishwasher: 30 to 42 inches wide by 24 inches deep by 35 inches tall
  • Compact dishwasher: 18 inches wide by 24 inches deep by 35 inches tall
  • Countertop dishwasher: 22 inches wide by 20 inches deep by 17 inches tall
  • Portable dishwasher: Dimensions range from 18 inches wide by 26 inches deep by 36 inches tall; to 24 inches wide by 30 inches deep by 37 inches tall (This depends on the specific model and whether it’s a countertop dishwasher or standing dishwasher.)

How to Measure a Dishwasher Rough Opening

Because there’s no one answer to the “how wide is a dishwasher” question, it’s important to measure the opening where your dishwasher will go before purchasing a new model. The steps outlined below will help you take accurate measurements of the rough opening. This will give you the dishwasher width, length, and height that will fit under your countertops or in your kitchen island.

As you measure the space for your ideal dishwasher size, record each measurement on a notepad (or in your smartphone) so you don’t forget them.

STEP 1: Measure to find the dishwasher width.

Measuring left-to-right, use a tape measure to find the width of the interior opening, usually between two cabinets. Take at least two measurements. Determine both the width at the top of the opening and the bottom of the opening, so you are aware of any major differences between the two. If the widths don’t match, double-check by measuring a few more times. If the opening widens toward the top or bottom, go with the smaller measurement.

If you will be installing your dishwasher next to a wall or the side of another cabinet, allow at least 2 inches of additional space. After you’ve measured the width of the opening, write the measurement down on a notepad.

STEP 2: Measure to find the dishwasher depth.

Reach to the back wall of the cabinet with your tape measure to find the cabinets’ depth (from the back wall to the front of the cabinet). Repeat this step on the opposite cabinet side to double-check your measurements. Record the measurement for depth in your notepad.

As you measure the depth, keep in mind that the dishwasher door will need space to fully open. Depending on the dishwasher you choose, most manufacturers recommend having at least 21 to 27 inches of space between the dishwasher and the cabinet or wall in front of it.

STEP 3: Measure to find the dishwasher height.

To find the height of the dishwasher space, take three different measurements from the left, middle, and right side of the opening. Taking just one measurement could be misleading if your kitchen floors are not completely level.

Start by placing the end of the tape measure on the floor on the left side of the opening. Extend the tape measure up to the bottom of the counter, and record this measurement in your notebook. Repeat these steps again to measure the height of the middle and right side of the opening. If there is slight variation between the heights, don’t worry too much. Many dishwashers have adjustable legs to help keep it level with the counter.

Final Thoughts

While 24 inches is the standard dishwasher width, it is still important to measure the space in your kitchen before purchasing a new appliance. Dishwasher sizes can vary, and careful measurements will make sure the new one you choose fits into the opening in your cabinets perfectly.
