Chase Brush, Contributing Writer

About

Chase Brush is a freelance writer and editor with almost 10 years of experience researching and reviewing gadgets on the internet. He started working with BobVila.com in 2022, covering outdoor equipment, kitchen appliances, and other products.

Experience

Born and raised in New Jersey, Chase began his career in journalism as a political reporter. From there, he quickly moved into freelancing, and over the years he has written and edited for dozens of publications on the web—from outdoor news sites to history magazines. His first foray into product reviews came in 2015, writing and editing for Ezvid Wiki, the largest and most comprehensive video wiki on the web. Since then, his work has appeared on several other consumer review outlets, such as GameRevolution.com, DogTime.com, and BestReviews.com.

Chase has produced and edited reviews for hundreds of products—everything from smartphones and laptops to dog collars and cat food. He’s particularly knowledgeable about automotive tools, cookware, and camping gear, having spent years tinkering in those areas as a lifetime hobbyist. When not behind a keyboard, he can usually be found experimenting in the kitchen; riding a bike or motorcycle; or camping, climbing, and hiking outside.

Education

Chase received Bachelor of Arts in economics and philosophy from Rutgers University in 2014 and a Master of Arts in journalism from the City University of New York’s Graduate School of Journalism in 2019. In 2021, he finished a yearlong fellowship with the Poynter Institute, an award-winning nonprofit that provides journalism training for students and working professionals.

Additionally, Chase has a handful of nonprofessional certifications to support an ever-growing list of hobbies, including a motorcycle and boat license and a belay certification at his local climbing gym.

Highlights

Proudest DIY

Chase is particularly proud of his Ford Transit van, spending many hours—and too much money—converting it into a camper for long road trips. It’s actually his second camper van, the first being an old Dodge Ram van that he and a buddy spent 6 months living in while traveling across the country in 2010.
