How We Tested the Best Window Bird Feeders
I first installed each bird feeder, noting how easy or complex it was to set up. I filled the feeders with bird food and left them up for 2 weeks, cleaning and refilling each window bird feeder once during that time and observing how easy they were to clean, replace, and refill. I paid attention to which feeders stayed in place best and how wet or dry the food stayed in inclement weather. I also dropped each feeder onto grass, concrete, and gravel from a window height (approximately 7 feet off the ground) to see how they fared.

I also appreciated the divided seed tray, which can be used to store two different types of food. Overall, this bird feeder was simple to install, use, refill, and clean. When it comes time to take the feeder off the window to clean it, it can take a little finagling to remove all four suction cups.

This window bird feeder is called a ranch style because it is wide but not very tall. It has a roof and sides, which give it some natural shelter. It’s very lightweight and simple to install, with three spare suction cups. One of the best aspects of this bird feeder is the shape—it can be placed toward the bottom of the window without blocking the view, all while allowing plenty of bird peeping.
Unfortunately, the nature of the wide-open design didn’t protect the seed as well from the rain and wind, so the seed got wet during a storm. The seed tray can be removed easily, so a quick refill is possible if the seed becomes damp. Aside from this minor inconvenience, this bird feeder performed very well.

Designed for hummingbirds, this bird feeder for windows took only minutes to install. There are two parts to this window bird feeder: a metal holder to which the suction cups attach and the bottle that holds the hummingbird food (also known as sugar water). It’s very simple to clean and refill, and I appreciated the extra little flower covers. I did find it leaked a little bit during the initial installation, which I suspect is normal when the bottle is full and it’s being flipped upside down. When I installed it again after cleaning and refilling it, only a few drops fell below.

A big selling point for me was the vacuum suction cup feature—once the suction cups are in place, two latches help hold them in place.

One of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to make a clear window bird feeder is to upcycle a clear plastic bottle, such as a 2-liter soda bottle. Clean and wash the bottle and poke one hole in each side of the bottle about 2 inches above the lid. Use these holes to stick chopsticks to create a perch. Next, cut a hole about an inch in diameter above the perch to allow birds to reach the seed. This hole can be enlarged to accommodate different types of bird food. Glue two or three suction cups onto the side of the bottle using super-glue. Once they are set, fill the birdseed, replace the lid, and flip the bottle upside down. Attach it to the window and you’re set.
