Even as a smaller project, my kitchen renovation has consumed me this past year. We’re chipping away at it bit by bit: paint the cabinets this month, paint the walls the next, update electrical, install a dishwasher… The list goes on. Now that my dishwasher is in, I’ve set my sights on updating another major appliance while retailers are running Black Friday appliance sales: the refrigerator.
If you’re like me and lucky enough to avoid replacing a broken appliance sooner than November, now is one of the best times to buy a fridge. Black Friday refrigerator deals can save hundreds of dollars on the cost of a new appliance. Likely, most of the units that you can buy today will also operate more efficiently than a refrigerator that is 10 to 20 years old, meaning you can save on energy costs by picking up a newer model now, too. My existing fridge is about 9 years old, generates extra heat, and makes some sounds when it cycles—I can’t imagine that it operates at peak efficiency.
Is It Time to Replace Your Fridge?
If your refrigerator is over 10 years old, it’s worth checking in on its performance to make sure that it’ll last you at least another year. (You don’t want to run into a problem when you can only find them at sticker price.) Get ahead of any appliance failures by looking for these signs that it’s time to replace your fridge.
- Your fridge generates excess heat.
- Food spoils prematurely.
- There’s excess condensation.
- Your fridge makes unusual noises.
- There’s excess frost in your freezer.
- Your utility bills are suddenly higher.
Here are the five refrigerator deals I’m considering this Black Friday.
GE 27 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator in Fingerprint Resistant Stainless with Internal Dispenser at The Home Depot for $1,258 (Save $1,141)
As you’ll see with most of these models, I’m not crazy about the water and ice dispensers being located on the door, so I like how this Energy Star-rated moves it to the inside without taking up any precious door space. (The result? Deep door bins to fit gallon-size drinks.) Behind the French doors, three full-width shelves offer flexible fridge configuration with easy-to-retract ledges to fit even the tallest items from a grocery haul, while a bottom freezer holds 8.18 cubic feet of frozen goods.
Whirlpool 25 cu. ft. Side by Side Refrigerator in Monochromatic Stainless Steel at The Home Depot for $998 (Save $601)
I tend to overstuff my freezer and can’t ever get to anything in the back, so I like the added organization that comes with a side-by-side fridge. Everything feels accessible everywhere in this 25 cubic foot Whirlpool refrigerator, right down to the adjustable gallon bins in the doors.
Frigidaire 30 in. 20 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator in Stainless Steel at The Home Depot for $678 (Save $221)
Tried and true, the top-freezer refrigerator offers a familiar design that earns 4.4 stars with The Home Depot shoppers. While slim on features, the silver lining would be eliminating some of the most common causes for troubleshooting and repair. However, I do like that this LG model acts as a base with an option to add an ice maker added separately if I ever miss this down the road.
