When temperatures reach sweltering heights, it can get dangerous, but sometimes attending outdoor functions in those conditions is unavoidable. Since you can’t carry a personal air conditioner, a portable neck fan is the next best option. These fans look similar to traditional headphones but fit around the neck. They feature dozens of tiny air outlets, multiple speed settings, and a rechargeable battery that can last several hours on a single charge.

I was skeptical that a neck fan could make a difference when temperatures exceeded 80 degrees Fahrenheit, so I tested the highly rated Jisulife portable neck fan. I took it to my nephew’s baseball games and two camping trips. My kids and I used it for multiple days and noted how cool we felt when wearing the fan compared to our comfort levels without it. We also evaluated it for comfort, battery runtime, and cost value.

Boasting a sleek U-shaped design and weighing just 9 ounces, the lightweight Jisulife portable neck fan is a personal cooling device made to sit comfortably around the neck. It pulls in air through its dual-sided motor and then circulates it through its 78 air outlets, providing a breeze to the neck and face.

It has a 4,000 milliampere lithium-ion battery with a runtime of 4 to 16 hours, depending on which of the three speed settings you use. Unfortunately, there’s no battery display, so you can’t tell when the battery is getting low, although it lasted more than 5 hours for me, toggling between the medium and high settings. It comes with a charger, and the battery takes about 3.5 hours to recharge.

The Jisulife fan runs quietly with a 25 decibel noise level, allowing users to carry on conversations and regular activity without interruption. It’s available in multiple colors, but selection varies depending on the retailer.

Comfortable to Wear

I’ve long been a fan of fans. I sleep with a fan running and keep a box fan in my camper, which I tote in and out during the summer to stay cool. However, the thought of a neck fan had never appealed to me. I assumed they’d be uncomfortable and inefficient. I was wrong.

The Jisulife neck fan was so lightweight that I often forgot I was wearing it. It rested comfortably around my neck without being tight or irritating. My three kids, aged 7 to 15, also found it comfortable and cool—so much so that arguments broke out concerning who got to use the fan and for how long.

Curious if it was just as comfortable on slightly larger neck sizes, I had my husband test it, and it fit him with no problem.

A Great Product, But Not a Miracle Worker

My primary testing goal was to determine whether the Jisulife fan could really make the summer heat more bearable and if it was worth the money. After wearing it for several days at 85 degrees Fahrenheit and letting my entire family use it, the answer was a unanimous “yes.”

The fan’s air outlets are evenly spaced around its U-shaped design, so every time I powered it on, I would feel a nice breeze on the back and sides of my neck, which helped keep sweat from beading. I primarily used the medium and high settings, but the low setting would be helpful when temperatures drop below 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

The long battery life allowed me to use it multiple times without recharging. However, it should be noted that this fan isn’t a miracle worker. I was still hot and uncomfortable during heat waves—just more comfortable than if I hadn’t used the fan.

Is the Jisulife neck fan right for you?

The Jisulife portable neck fan is right for you if you’ll be attending outdoor activities and want a way to help beat the heat. I now keep it in my bag to use when I’m at sporting events, at the pool, or on a camping trip. In addition to keeping adults comfortable, it’s also a hit with younger kids.

However, like some other neck fans, the Jisulife isn’t adjustable. While it fit everyone in my family comfortably (including my 7-year-old daughter), an adjustable portable neck fan might be a better option if you’re worried about the fan sliding or being too snug.

For those who don’t enjoy the sensation of something sitting on their neck but still want to cool off while outdoors, a portable battery-operated fan that you can hold or place next to you will get the job done. I recently tested a slew of house and garage fans, including the DeWalt 20V MAX Cordless Jobsite Fan. While it’s more expensive at nearly $100, it’s powered by DeWalt’s batteries, can withstand drops, provides impressive airflow, and is lightweight and compact enough to carry around. You can knock it off a set of bleachers and you won’t have to worry about it breaking. Plus, it’s likely to last for years.

At about $26, the Jisulife neck fan is a good investment if you spend a lot of time outdoors. It withstood many drops by my kids, and since it has a rechargeable battery and comes with a charger, you won’t have to worry about buying and replacing its batteries.
