If I’m going to wear a pair of work boots every day, comfort is my top priority, but I’ve never found a truly comfortable pair of safety-toe boots—until now. When I got the opportunity to test the Red Wing’s Apex Women’s Work Boot, I eagerly accepted, but I was skeptical about whether I’d like them. Boy, was I in for a surprise!

Slipping my feet into the boots for the first time was slightly challenging because I didn’t know how the BOA Fit System worked. A quick glance at the instructions made it clear that all I had to do was pull the BOA dial out when I wanted to open the boot—then push the dial in and twist it when I wanted to lace up the boot. After a couple of tries, I mastered the technique. Having worn the boots for a while, I wish all boots offered the BOA Fit System. It’s so much faster than traditional laces, and the best part is that the high-tensile laces tighten uniformly, so I didn’t experience the typical discomfort of string laces that are too tight at the ankle but too loose at the instep.

The Apex boots run true to size, and they’re unusually comfortable. They offer reasonable ankle support and a cushioned insole. What surprised me the most was how lightweight they were. I’m used to safety-toe boots weighing 2-3 pounds apiece, but the Red Wings weigh just over one pound each. The safety toe is aluminum, so it doesn’t add to the boots’ weight, and the boots are flexible enough that I could climb ladders and walk on slopes without feeling stiff or causing blisters.

I wore the boots a few hours every day for two weeks, and they are by far the most comfortable safety-toe boots I’ve ever worn. But they’re a bit on the pricey side—currently selling for $264.99 at Red Wing. Still, if you need a safety-toe boot that looks and feels good, you won’t regret investing in these women’s work boots. Once you master the BOA Fit System, I think you’ll love these boots as much as I do.
