Rotary Thread Standard Restore Kit
Our Ratings: Ease of Use 5/5; Performance 4.8/5; Durability 5/5; Value 4/5
Nuts, bolts, and threaded pipes are found in fastenings and fittings in everything from small motors to automobiles and plumbing systems. And they’re great—until their threads are rusted, crushed, or stripped, and then they’re useless. At least, I thought they were useless until I tested a simple-looking tool called Rotary Thread.
Rotary Thread isn’t a standalone tool—it’s more like an assortment of bits designed to be used with a drill or a rotary tool, like Dremel. The bits are helpful enough that the Rotary Thread Standard Restore Kit recently won a spot in our competition to discover the best new hand tools of 2024.
I tried out bits from three different Rotary Thread kits: the Starter Restore Kit, the Standard Restore Kit, and the Master Restore Kit. To test their performance, I gathered several bolts and nuts with damaged threads and clamped them securely to my workbench. Then, I fitted Rotary Thread bits in my drill and Dremel and got busy fixing the threads. The tapered edges of the spinning bits quickly ground away rust and reshaped the grooves in the threads.
Rotary Thread makes a variety of bits for specialty filing/smoothing uses, and many of those are geared toward mechanical repairs, such as rebuilding hydraulic cylinders. But the bits in their Standard Restore Kit are game-changers for anyone who’s ever had to stop mid-project and run to the hardware store because they ran into a nut or bolt with damaged threads. With Rotary Thread, restoring the threads to a workable condition is quick and easy.
