If you’re looking for a DIY advent calendar for your favorite handyman (or gal), look no further. I tried out Vera’s 2024 Tool Advent Calendar and found it entertaining and joyful. It’s a traditional holiday countdown to Christmas—but with a delightful tool twist! I opened mine all at once to share what was inside, but opening one gift per day is customary, starting on December 1st.

Each tool gift is tucked in its own little compartment, and it was easy to poke through the perforated covers to discover them. Retrieving most gifts was also simple, although I had to tug a bit to get a couple out. The back of the advent calendar box has a sturdy cardboard pop-out stand that holds the box upright for easy viewing, so it could be placed on a table, countertop, or mantle during the advent season.

When I’d opened all the gifts, I had a ratcheting screwdriver (tiny, but it works!) and an assortment of bits and sockets—plus a handle and a case for storing everything. But that’s not all—the advent calendar also contains small salt and pepper shakers, a bottle opener, and a canvas case to keep them in.

The salt and pepper shakers were an amusing surprise, but who knows when you’ll need to season some food or snacks? The back of the canvas case has a little velcro strip, and a corresponding peel-and-stick velcro patch can be placed on a workshop wall or even an inside door of a work truck. Anyone who packs their lunch for work or picks up fast food and eats in their truck might find it handy to have salt and pepper close at hand.

Okay, so this isn’t going to replace your regular toolkit, but it is functional. The little bits are durable and well-made (Wera is known for making quality tools). The toolkit is best suited for loosening and tightening small fasteners. The handles aren’t big enough to get the sort of leverage needed to remove stuck-on or rusted fasteners, but they’re perfect for many little screws and nuts on everyday objects around the house. I successfully used them to remove the screws in the bottom of a piggybank.

Whether you’re looking for a gift for a construction worker, a mechanic, or a workshop warrior, this advent calendar is just the ticket. The recipient will enjoy the daily countdown to Christmas and will have a complete little toolkit they’ll appreciate long after the holidays are over.
