Over the past few years, Woodland Tools Co. has quietly been building a reputation as one of the most reliable and affordable outdoor cutting tool brands. I recently tested two of its pruning saws, the Compact Duralight Folding Saw and the Super Duty 18-Inch D-Handle Saw, and I have to admit, I was impressed.
The Duralight folding saw is one of the largest of its type, with plenty of grip space for two-handed work. The handle length is 11.625 inches, which is the same as the storage length when folded. With the 8.875-inch blade extended, the tool is 20.5 inches long. The saw weighs 11 ounces. It features a carbon steel pull-cut blade and pivot bolt, along with a soft-grip synthetic handle with an integrated hang loop. The blade locks into three different operating positions: straight, angled downward, or angled upward.
This folding saw is a handy tool to keep around for quick, light-duty trimming. I used it to cut through branches up to 4.5 inches in diameter, and probably could have cut limbs up to 6 inches with no trouble. The relatively lightweight and balanced design gives it a substantial feel with just enough downward pressure on the blade for smooth cutting action. The blade has a slight curve that helps it stay in the cut, and just the right amount of flexibility for smooth action. The three optional cutting positions make it easy and comfortable to cut from almost any angle.

Woodland Tools Super Duty D-Handle Saw
The Super Duty D-handle saw is built with a longer blade and aggressive teeth to quickly cut larger limbs, including some that might otherwise call for a chainsaw. The carbon steel blade measures 19.5 inches from tip to handle, and the overall length including the handle is 24.75 inches. This saw weighs 15.5 ounces. Like the folding saw, this saw features a slightly curved edge and cuts on the pull stroke for improved cutting speed and accuracy, along with a soft-grip synthetic handle. The blade is securely attached to the handle with three bolts.
The Super Duty saw is one of the best manual saws I’ve used for clearing brush. Those who have only used old-fashioned bow saws for this task should prepare to be blown away. The long, tapered blade easily fits into narrow branch crotches for quick, clean branch removal. I used it to saw through branches up to 10 inches in diameter. The 5-inch opening of the D-handle is large enough to comfortably fit one gloved hand, and there is a nice flat area on top of the handle to stabilize the saw with the opposite hand. The only thing missing was a scabbard, which you may want to purchase separately to protect yourself and the saw blade when not in use.
When it comes to light-to-medium-duty limbing and branch cutting, these two saws cover all the bases. Even better, both of these saws are “guaranteed forever.” Anyone in the market for a new saw for yard maintenance and even for camping should have both of these saws on their radar.
